Dedication
The Sťáťimc Heritage and Learning Centre is dedicated to the ancestors, and,
with deep respect, to the Elders, who, by sharing their wisdom and leadership, provide
the knowledge, skills and values that have assured and will continue to assure the
vibrancy of the St’át’imc culture.
“Our children need to learn to speak our language and to learn our ways.
I am so afraid that, in the future, our children and their children will not be able to
reply when someone asks them ‘Who are you? Who are your ancestors?’ And people will
wonder who they are….

Sťáťimc Heritage and Learning Centre Design
The Sťáťimc Heritage and Learning Centre will be built beside the Recreation Centre on Main Street Lillooet British Columbia on land
donated by the District Municipality of Lillooet. The design will incorporate a
S7ístken (or traditional pit house), an image associated with the
Sťáťimc traditional way of life. Designed to be
environmentally-responsible in construction and operation, the 15,000 square foot
Centre will respect the values and traditions of the Sťáťimc
people.
The current design for the Sťáťimc Heritage and Learning Centre will house:
- A museum/gallery
- A performing arts/and, possibly, a movie theatre
- Classrooms
- Artefact Storage
- A language laboratory
- Arts & crafts workshop
- A publication centre
- An elders lounge
- A gift shop
- Library/conference facility
The Future
It is intended that the Sťáťimc Heritage and Learning Centre will become a registered training institute with the ability to deliver accredited language courses and eventually other accredited training programs. Income from the gift shop and the rental of facilities will support the Centre’s operation and maintenance. The museum/gallery and the coordination of Lillooet area interpretive programs will enhance and build on Lillooet’s growing reputation in the tourism market with visitors traveling by rail, tour bus, and private vehicles.
Beyond these considerations, the Sťáťimc Heritage and Learning Centre will showcase the past and present cultural accomplishments of the Sťáťimc people. The Sťáťimc Heritage and Learning Centre will promote knowledge and mutual understanding and will be a source of pride for all citizens.
